On this day in live music history: Allman Brothers (w/ guests) - Mountain Jam (12-31-73)
Most of the songs I post on here do not necessarily mark major moments in live music history, but are instead little morsels from the past that I find interesting for one reason or another. But every once in a while I post a song like this one that truly marks a moment in history that will stand for eternity, or at least should! The Grateful Dead did not play a New Year’s Eve show in 1973 after having helped to ring in the new year each of the previous several years. With the extra time on their hands, Dead members Jerry Garcia and Bill Kreutzmann— along with another Bay Area legend, Boz Scaggs— sat in with the Allmans for the second set of their show at San Francisco’s Cow Palace. Just like when Dickey Betts and Gregg Allman sat in with the Dead six months earlier at RFK Stadium in DC, the two bands’ sounds melt into one cohesive groove and the improvisation created is truly the stuff dreams are made of. This monster Mountain Jam shows off some serious jamming.
