On this day in live music history: Although it has become cliche amongst Deadheads to claim that the band’s greatest show took place on 5-8-77, I am not one to argue. Other shows from other eras shine as well, obviously, but the band was never tighter than they were in the Spring of 1977, and 35 years ago today happened to be the crown jewel of their crowning tour: a show at the relatively tiny Barton Hall on the campus of Cornell University in upstate New York.

Every song from both sets that night was played beyond, at, or near perfection including the “Walk Me Out in the Morning Dew” which closed the huge second set in triumphant fashion.

Here is the Grateful Dead’s late archivist, Dick Latvala’s vault notes from that night.

Oh boy Duck fans. This might just be the monster of all Duck videos. A great mix of the best moments in recent program history.

The Terry Obee end-around (v. Washington) near the beginning of the video might be my all time Duck highlight, as I can still remember the pure feeling of JOY as my dad tossed me in the air repeatedly and I got my first real taste of Autzen Stadium truly going BANANAS!

It’s been two weeks now since Levon Helm passed away and I feel the need to finally post something in his honor. Of all of the great musicians who have moved on in my lifetime, this one seems to sting a little more than most.

The Band is easily in the top five on my favorite bands list, and has been ever since I first saw The Last Waltz, my freshman year in college. The two guys that drew me in the most in that group were Rink Danko and Levon Helm.

The rest of the band is great, don’t get me wrong, but you kind of get a feeling that with Danko (whose passing in ‘99 had an equal effect on me) and Helm, that they were channeling a different sector of the universe than most of us have access to.

As good as The Last Waltz is, it does not feature the band in its musical prime, but instead shows a band that is indeed playing its last show due to inner turmoil. This clip comes from the fantastic Festival Express, and features The Band in 1970, at their peak as a raw performing group.

Haven’t seen Phish since 2009 when I saw five shows. They’re skipping the Northwest this year altogether. Big time bummer. Luckily for phans like me who aren’t in a position to catch a distant tour stop, the band provides us with plenty of HQ HD videos via their website like this one featuring a mean 46 Days>Tube combo from the Greek Theater on 8/7/10.
